Hey guys,
In this post, I would like to share tips for those applying for jobs, which are kind of obvious, but 90% of people make mistakes on at least 1 of these topics.
These tips are MY view on mistakes that I see several candidates making in the various selection processes that I have already conducted and I would like to help them prepare better for selection processes in general.
1) Nowadays, many people no longer look at printed CVs. Many people and companies now prefer to analyze your LinkedIn profile, as it has updated information and MUCH more information about you. If you know someone who doesn't have LinkedIn, give them a shout-out.
2) Keep your LinkedIn profile always updated. Did you take a course? Did you watch an interesting live? Did you find a post interesting? Did you pass a certification test? POST! Recruiters like to know that you are always studying, chasing and are not in your comfort zone.
3) DO NOT lie on your profile: I have even seen “fake” experiences from a course that instructs students to pretend that they “worked” at the course company to try to deceive recruiters and have a “first experience in the area”.
4) When applying for a job, RESEARCH ABOUT THE COMPANY. I have already received CVs for Power Tuning (data consultancy company) where the person wrote that the company was prominent in the automotive sector in the question “Why would I like to work here”. This is VERY BAD.
5) Focus on the vacancy. If the vacancy is for a Data Engineer and you have nothing to do with this profile (Ex: You are a developer, DBA, etc.), no experience or course in the area, do not apply. Focus on the area you know or start taking courses and projects in that area (and post on your LinkedIn – Tip 1)
6) Be aware of your salary expectations. If you are an intern or junior, have little or no experience, or are in a career transition, you won't ask for 10,000 in salary, right?
7) Make your own posts: It's cool to see that you share third-party content, a sign that you are studying. But it's good to see projects and things YOU'VE DONE.
8) Be more detailed in your work experiences: Detail which tools you used, for how long, which challenges you resolved, projects you worked on. Generic descriptions such as “Data analysis and management” or “BI creation and management” do not add anything.
9) There are several courses where you learn how to create beautiful and super eye-catching dashboards. But don't just post this dashboard. A lot of people will post this same report as you. Use what you learned in the course to create your version.
10) Interact more with people: Follow people who are references in the area, comment on posts, ask questions, read their articles, participate in lives, go to in-person events in your city. The IT area has this difference in relation to others. It's a lot of high quality and free content. You just have to want to learn.
11) NETWORK. This helps A LOT to be able to relocate better. Being recommended by someone you trust and who is known in the area helps a lot.
12) Build your portfolio: This helps the recruiter understand what you really know IN PRACTICE. Post your codes on GitHub, publish some reports and share the link. Everything counts.
13) Be thorough in your area of expertise: If you want to pursue data engineering, don't just post about Power BI and/or Python. Study, practice and also post about Modeling, SQL, some ETL/ELT tools, cloud, etc.
14) Practice more: Don’t just read articles, watch live streams and videos. Put what you learned into practice, do your labs, tests or small projects, otherwise you will forget all this quickly. Furthermore, you will be able to post about the content you read/watched and after the exercise/project you did based on that content 🙂
15) In the “Summary” section of your LinkedIn, describe a little about yourself, your area of expertise, the main challenges you have worked on and a summary of the tools you have mastered and how much experience you have in each.
16) Do you have questions about which tools are most used in the company to prepare for an interview? Research the company on LinkedIn, look for some people who work there and take a look at their profiles. You can extract valuable tips to prepare better.
17 Don't just post complaints on social media.
18) If you are sending or attaching a resume, put your name in the file. Profile(1) no one will find it.
19) Follow me for more tips 🙂
